Photographs of the Partial Eclipse
The maximum of the partial eclipse was at 3:32 PM, April 8, 2024 in the Washington DC metro area. Unfortunately, it was still mostly cloudy, so I wasn’t able to take photos right at that time. All photos were taken at the same exposure of 1/500s at an aperture of 8.0 and ISO 100, using a 18 stop solar filter. I had to wait for holes in the clouds. The overall light coming through the atmosphere goes down as it gets later in the day, which is why the first image is the brightest.
There are two clusters of sun spots visible, each surrounded by a lighter regions.
A colander: Many Pinhole cameras
In the later batch of photos, when casting the light sideways at the colander, the two set of holes line up different amounts. The smaller the overlap, the thinner the projected eclipse shape.
